I Wanna Know (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1981

This song is about seeing someone you care for with someone who could care less. Makes a great video! My vocals got buried in this mix version and I can't find another one with the original mix. I do a really fun acoustic guitar solo in this that I've always liked.

Franklin Lane (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1982

A song about going back to your hometown and remembering certain things through a different lens. We added a French Horn to the intro on this because a friend of ours at Golden West College in Huntngton Beach, CA was a player and wanted to be in one of our recordings. It's a bit weird but works.

Diana (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1981

This song is about the beautiful Princess Diana Spencer and her marriage to Prince Charles. Back in the day, this was a big deal. This was one of the first demos that I played piano on.

Horizon (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1980

This was about going to California to pursue my athletic and musical dreams. It was quite a time.  This was one of those that we did in one take. It has a bit of a live feel to it.

Don't Take a Heart (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1983

This song was about a friend of mine who played with the hearts of those who loved him. It was hard to watch, but made for a good lyric. There are some edit errors and time signature problems with this recording, but I always liked the feel of it. Because it was a demo, we didn't fix it.

Trash TV (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1983

Talk shows took a weird turn when people started breaking chairs over each others' heads on reality television. It was outrageous...and stupid. I like the guitar work in this one - I was going for a raw edge and the solos are unedited and not spliced.

Living Inside Your Fantasy (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1983

This one's self-explanatory. Boy meets girl - girl is a tramp but gets a song out of it. The mix is muddy and somehow my vocal got buried. I was unhappy with the engineer who mixed it, but I don't have the original cut.

Love Story (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1983

A tale of two lonely people who miss a chance to connect. This one has a very long instrumental intro before it settles down into a soft ballad.  Our producer at the time said it wasn't commercial enough, so we canned it.

Time to Time (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1982

This has a heavy feel to it. My drummer at the time, Jim Hill, made sure his track was in the front of the mix. It's about meeting up with an ex after many years and experiencing the resulting memory resurgence.

Modern Girl (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1985

This demo was a blast to make. We did this in one take and, though there are a number of mistakes in it, I love the edgy rock feel in it. It's about my time working at Apple Computer and working with a woman who didn't care who she stepped on to go up the ladder. She ended up being Apple's CFO.

The Stallion Sleeps (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1983

A song about being the one who speaks up and takes all the risk for the people who won't or can't. It's a bit self-indulgent, but I love my guitar sound in this and wish the whole song had been received a little better by our manager.

Mother of Three (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1983

A song about a woman I knew who sadly painted herself  into a corner and silently wanted to start over again. The too-long organ intro by David Taylor should have been cut,  but it was still fun to make. There are a few editing issues with it, too, but I always liked the feel.

White Lies (Demo)

Demo recorded in 1984

This is one I think everyone can identify with. We all go through something like this. The chorus is too long and that makes the song too long, but I love the jam-style bridge in there with my long guitar solo. No edits, no overdubs. Just me and my Les Paul - mistakes and all.
