After the Storm was designed to be Michael's 2003 follow up to Chasing the Sun, the band's first commercially released record, which made a surprising and inspiring run. The band was more together on this record and was joined by The West Coast Ensemble and Jennifer DeLong for some rich and wonderful sessions.
This album was recorded in starts and stops, in different recording studios over several years. The sound can only be described as a product of too much time, too much late night food (think Tommy's in Hollywood) and too much San Pellegrino (and maybe a few beers).
The title track is a rocking reminder that we can survive the most difficult and challenging times and still emerge stronger and better. After the Storm rocks from the opening bar and delivers a punch to the last note of Michael's lead guitar at the end.
'Hand in Hand', written for Michael's son, is a fun and catchy instrumental, featuring an electric oboe, in a wonderful harmony duet at the end of the song with Michael's lead guitar. Hawai'ian Rain is a song with a Hawai'ian feel, inspired by frolicking in a downpour in Kona on a July day with Michael and his son. It is redemptive and healing, while 'Lost and Found''s emotion centers around the realization of coming to the end of a road.
